Horror master Stephen King marked his debut as a director in this sick and twisted tale of what happens when machines take over the earth. When a comet flashes across the sky, suddenly all machinery seem to go hay wire. Killing machines of metal suddenly take on a mind of their own and there is no place to run.
Suddenly, soda machines, lawnmowers and my favorite scene with a steamroller go on a killing spree for no apparent reason. Trucks suddenly become psychotic killers in a world created in the mind by the great horror legend Stephen King. At the Dixie Boy truck stop, a group of truckers and civilians find themselves trapped at the mercy of of these large 18 wheelers. These trucks step into overdrive as they seek human vengeance. The war is on. Who made who? and who will survive the final showdown of man vs. bloodthirsty machinery.
In this flick, Stephen King has created an upside down world of what it would be like if machines suddenly took on a mind of it's own and goes on a killing spree. The premise being taken by an earlier film entitled, "Trucks", gave Stephen King the idea behind, "Maximum Overdrive". A fun yet strange tale that and features a headbanging score by AC/DC. So, get ready to rock and roll and hold on for the ride of your life.
Now available on DVD by Anchor Bay featuring a Widescreen Presentation (2.35:1), enhanced for 16x9 TV's. This film has never looked better, though there are slight signs of grain, the colors and black levels are very good. The DVD also contains the films original Theatrical Trailer which features Stephen King doing some kooky promotion. Anchor Bay has re-mastered the soundtrack from it's original 2.0 to 5.1 Surround. The audio is very good aswell, But don't expect any fireworks coming from your back speakers.
Overall this film isn't Kings best story telling but very entertaining cheese. Not to mention the great AC/DC Soundtrack! Now if anything this is reason alone to watch the movie.

A young married couple find themselves lost in the isolated town of Gatlin, Nebraska. Running out of gas and no one in sight, they find themselves driving around in circles and even through corn fields. While traveling on a road they are shaken when they hit a young boy who is covered with blood in the middle of the road. Vicki (Hamilton), immediately breaks down in tears while her husband the doctor goes into the fields to investigate. There he finds blood on the corn branches as well as a suitcase also drenched in blood. He instantly wraps up the dead body of the boy and places him in the trunk of his car. Off for help they go but there isn't a soul in sight in this desolated town. Suddenly he sees a door swing closed in a nearby house and they pull up to see if someone is there who can help. Once inside he finds a young girl by the name of Sarah. Sarah has a remarkable psychic gift and foresees that the couple in danger. Vicki is told to stay with Sarah while her husband goes for help.
Meanwhile, Issac and Malachi who are the leaders of this religious cult of children have slaughtered all of the towns people to a God named, He Who Walks Behind The Rows. Now all of the adults are gone and they are disturbed by the two outside intruders.
While Burt (Horton) is looking for help, Vicki is suddenly abducted by the clan. A crown made out of corn is placed on her head and she is placed on a large crucifix made of corn. Burt begins to find clues and realizes what they are going to do to Vicki. In a race against time he goes. Can he save Vicki from the made clutches of the clan or will she be their next sacrifice?
Children of the Corn was the beginning to many sequels which followed. Now a cult horror classic it is almost laughable and cheesy rather than scary. Linda Hamilton (Terminator and T2) and Peter Horton (Thirtysomething), do a find job in the acting department but the script is just silly. The special effects in the big climactic ending lead for a very dull and disappointing ending. Why sequels were made is beyond me, but I do remember seeing part 4 with actress Karen Black once and that was the best one of them all.
Now available on DVD from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment in a new 16 x 9 transfer and remasted 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio Surround.
Anchor Bay does it again with a beautiful film transfer for a film that any other studio would have done less for, considering a film of it's reputation. This film has never looked this good with a very clear and sharp image. The audio is very good as well though there isn't much happening in the surround speakers but still very good.
The films original theatrical trailer included with a reproduction of the films original theatrical poster and a 16 page booklet.
